Picnic at the Brick Works – An Event to Remember

On Sunday, September 16, Evergreen and Slow Food Toronto co-hosted what some are calling the best food event in Toronto in years. Even the birds seemed happy, as over 1300 guests, chefs, local producers, community activists, and dozens of volunteers, banded together to celebrate local, clean, safe and fair food. It was a moment to applaud the hard work of Ontario’s farmers’ as they worked side-by-side with Toronto’s outstanding chef community to serve up a gastronomic feast that left no one hungry. We had wine producers from the Niagara Region and Prince Edward County, plus local brewers and coffee roasters, keeping our glasses full. The City of Toronto’s self-serve water truck also saw to it that we didn’t go thirsty, plus ensured that we didn’t use hundreds of disposable water bottles. It was also great to see so many people arriving by bike or taking the shuttle buses.

The words of Ted Zettel, President of the Board of Organic Meadows, helped to reinforce the themes of the day – that we need to support our local farmers to keep the economics in farming and to help sustain the culture of the family farm. Buying locally produced foods is one way you can do this through your neighbourhood farmers’ market, as is joining Slow Food Toronto or supporting the work of any of the organizations present in the Community Marketplace. Over the years to come, Evergreen Brick Works will continue to build its food programs and marketplace activities to help build this vital local food movement.

To everyone who helped make this day possible, Evergreen and Slow Food Toronto extend our heartfelt thanks. We welcome your thoughts on the day and suggestions on how we can make next year’s Picnic an even greater success.
