What’s Being Built

A Sustainability Showcase

In May 2010, Evergreen Brick Works will open its doors as Canada’s first large-scale, environmental community centre featuring:

  • a native plant nursery and garden centre
  • youth “green job” employment training programs
  • children’s school programs and summer camps
  • a one of a kind children’s nature play area
  • hands-on geology and heritage exhibits
  • interactive green design exhibits and interpretive programs
  • food gardens, farmers’ markets, and a year-round Marché featuring local and small-scale producers

Our model facility will demonstrate cutting-edge green design features that both inspire and equip visitors to make changes in their own homes and businesses. We are working toward the highest goals:

Carbon Neutral for Heating and Cooling

  • high-efficiency buildings
  • operable windows, solar chimneys and waste-heat harvesting
  • a solar cogeneration system for power, heating and cooling

Net-Water Neutral

  • reducing stormwater runoff
  • 15 cisterns collecting more than 4 million litres of water from our roofs each year
  • rainwater captured to irrigate gardens, service washrooms and supply the cooling tower
  • wildlife-friendly stormwater management

Zero Waste to Landfill

  • on-site composting
  • 100% diversion of recyclable materials
  • 95% diversion of site-development debris from landfill
  • developing closed-loop supply chains

Sustainable Transportation

  • a dedicated shuttle bus and TTC service to the site
  • on-site car sharing, carpooling, plug-in stations for hybrids
  • ample bicycle parking, on-site bike clinics and repairs
  • better trail connections and signage for pedestrians and cyclists
