28 Days… Local Food Court
We are counting down to our historic Grand Opening. See you there!
Farm fresh produce and locally prepared foods are on offer at our farmers’ markets. (Photos: Melissa Yu)Today marked the second last Bay-Adelaide Farmers’ Market and it was another successful day.
The air was crisp and hinted that fall is near, pulling us into a reflective mood. As the market evolved over the course of the summer, the community started seeing it as more of a local food court. While there are farmers at the market each week, the majority are smaller food producers selling healthy, ready-made lunches, treats and other prepared foods.
It is this realization that has opened up an interesting discussion about what constitutes a farmers’ market and created another opportunity to engage our market community in an honest and collaborative discussion about how to bring local sustainable food into the city.

Joanne and Jenn, getting a head start. We can’t wait to get down to Evergreen Brick Works and to be surrounded by nature in the middle of the city. Don’t forget to mark off our Grand Opening celebrations on your calendar, and stay tuned for more information about our Community Day Festival.

Cup Plant – Now In Bloom at Evergreen Gardens

Cup plant in bloom: Photographer: Bransford, W.D. Mrs. @ Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Native Plant Information Network Image Gallery. (normal)
The big, brassy native cup plant is now in bloom at Evergreen Gardens and available for $8.69.
Cup plant, Silphium perfoliatum, is a beautiful native Ontario plant. Its large stature, (6 to 9 feet tall), and wide, tapered leaves are further complemented by an abundance of open yellow flowers. The flowers are in bloom now and will re-bloom well into the autumn.
This is a sun-loving plant. Its leaves clasp onto the stems forming a vessel that retains rain water and dew. Its common name is derived from this ingenious cup. Cup plant takes full sun, drought and clay conditions. While in bloom, hummingbirds and butterflies will be attracted to the plant’s nectar. After pollination, birds will visit the plant to feast on its seeds. If you want to see mature stands of this plant, take a walk into the Don Valley Brick Works Park behind Evergreen Brick Works. It grows in abundance back there.
