From cost savings to social and environmental benefits, carpooling is a great option for commuting to work and around the city. To learn more about the benefits of carpooling, I invited Rachelle Waterman, marketing manager Smart Commute North Toronto, Vaughan, into the passenger seat.
Smart Commute, a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the GTHA, helps employers and staff choose alternative, sustainable commuting options through resources like Car Pool Zone, their free online carpool match service.
Replacing up to four cars on the road, carpooling not only helps the environment by decreasing the amount of cars on the road and CO2 emissions released into the air, riders also save money as they can split expenses on gas and parking. To date, more than 150 employers, including Evergreen, have signed on to the program, with 350,000 commuters participating.
Smart Commute also encourages people to take public transit and helps promote bicycle safety with their Bicycle User Group, or BUG, a group of a people in a workplace, school, community, or neighbourhood, who come together to improve conditions for commuter cycling.
