It is no secret that the transportation sector significantly effects the environment—it’s one of the main drivers of climate change, air pollution and urban sprawl. Between 1990 and 2007, Ontario’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions rose by 13 percent, and transportation was the largest contributing sector, accounting for more than a third of that increase.
Reducing these negative impacts will require a wide variety of approaches—from investing in public transit and designing communities that encourage walking and cycling to building road and rail systems using sustainable materials.
